What is a ghost’s favorite dessert?
– Boo-berry pie with ice scream!

The leaves are changing colors, the wind is getting chillier, and the nights are getting spookier. It’s that time of year when children are counting down the days until they are able to wear their costumes and eat all the candy their little tummies can handle.

It’s Halloween time!

This year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Halloween will be a little different. Trick or treating may not be possible due to social distancing guidelines, or the simple fact that many parents may choose to stay indoors- feeling this is the safest option. Whether you choose to stay indoors or go trick-or-treating, there are many fun ways you can celebrate the holiday with your children.

One way of celebrating the season of Halloween is to bring the trick-or-treating home by creating Halloween treats that you can make together. There are many healthy treats you can make that will get your child excited about the holiday without the worry of out trick-or-treating on Halloween night.

These ideas combine fun family time with healthy snacks that the whole family to make together. Kids love to help in the kitchen, and there are many ways they can join you to make these spooky treats. Just grab your costumes and head to the kitchen for some family fun!

Pumpkin Cuties. 

What you’ll need: tangerines, oranges, or mandarins, and celery.

  1. Peel Tangerines

  2. Cut celery into tiny rectangular pieces

  3. Stick celery into the tangerines

Ghost Bananas: 

What you’ll need: bananas, chocolate chips, or colored icing. 

  1. Peel Bananas 

  2. Cut them in half 

  3. Place 2 chocolate chips to act as the eyes or if the child has a dairy allergy, you can use colored icing to dap on two dots for eyes

Pumpkin Veggie tray. 

What you’ll need: a plate, celery, mini carrots, black olives, cucumbers, two tiny bowls, and dressings or dips of your choice.

  1. Wash all of your veggies

  2. Place the two tiny bowls side by side towards the top center of the plate and fill it with any dip or your choice (ex. ranch, hummus, artichoke, Guacamole, blue cheese)

  3. Fill the plate with carrots in a circular pattern and fill them in with more carrots

  4. Cut up your cucumbers into slices and form a smiley face onto your plate filled with carrots.

  5. Place a handful of black olives in the center of the plate (this will be the nose). 

  6. Lastly, use about 4-5 celery sticks and place them at the top, you may cut to adjust to the size of your plate, but this will be the stem 

In the end you’ll have a carved pumpkin made out of healthy veggies.

Spider Pizza Bites: 

What you’ll need: mini bagels, pizza sauce, cheese, and black olives.

  1. Have 2 halves of the bagels open with the inside part facing up.

  2. Put pizza sauce on each bagel half

  3. Add cheese to the top layer. 

  4. Put in oven to bake for 15 minutes in 350°F

  5. Cut olives into halves

  6. Place on half facing down in the center of the pizza

  7. Slice the remaining olive half into 8 slices.

  8. Place 4 slices to the right of the olive, and 4 to the Left. 

    You now have little spiders on your pizza bites. For those with gluten allergies you can supplement the bagel with a gluten free bagel. For those with dairy allergies, replace regular cheese with dairy free cheese, vegan cheese, or skip a step and don’t add cheese at all.

This Halloween will surely be different, but it allows us the opportunity to be creative and bring the holiday spirit to our homes in new ways. Remember, even though these are difficult times, you and your children can still make this a Halloween to remember!
